Starting June 1st, 2025, a new dog law will come into force in the canton of Zurich, which prescribes new theory and practical lessons.
Anyone who acquires a new dog in the canton of Zurich from June 1st will be obliged to attend a theory course and then take a test. This only applies to dog owners who have not owned a dog in the last ten years. The theory course should be completed no later than 2 months after taking possession of the dog. As the theory course is designed as preparation for dog ownership, it should ideally take place before the dog is adopted and can be completed at the earliest one year before the dog moves in.
The practical course includes the training of tasks relevant to everyday life, which are taught in at least six practical lessons. Learning objectives are prescribed which must be achieved during the course. The course can be attended from the age of six months at the earliest and should be completed no later than one year after adopting the dog. The practical course is compulsory for all dog owners, regardless of breed and size, who acquire a dog or move to the canton of Zurich from June 1; this also applies to people who have previously owned dogs. Only dogs over the age of ten do not have to attend a practical course.
We are authorized to offer courses in accordance with the new dog law and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
